Overview Of Sibling DNA Test

Sibling DNA Test

Sibling DNA tests are done to determine whether children from same or different mothers share the same father or vice versa. In other words, their DNA is analyzed to determine whether they are full or half siblings.

Sibling DNA Test

The results of a sibling DNA test are at times difficult to interpret. For this reason most DNA testing laboratories recommend that the biological mother participate in the sibling DNA test.

Participation of the biological mother is also important in paternity tests and tests to determine grandparents or to establish other biological relationships. It increases the chances of accurately determining the biological relationship under question.

The DNA we have in us is something we have inherited from our parents. So, two siblings are likely to have certain similarities in their DNA compared to unrelated people.

In a sibling DNA test, DNA from two different people will be analyzed to confirm or negate whether they are siblings. The catch lies when the results are to be interpreted. Sometimes even though the test is done using the most modern technology and equipment, it is not possible to determine this relationship beyond doubt.

The price of a sibling DNA test in the US is generally around $ 500. You can give the samples at testing laboratories or you may send the samples to them by courier. Some laboratories have their DNA sample collecting kits available to buy online. Some others have them in pharmacies at various locations and even in certain clinics. You don't always have to go to a testing lab to get the test done.

If you want to produce your results in a court or a government authority, make sure you get your tests done from a government approved lab. Also if you are to send the samples to a testing lab, make sure this method of sample collection will be accepted by the testing lab to issue results acceptable to government authorities. Otherwise your results may not be accepted. But if you are getting the test done so that you will have your peace of mind, then you can opt for what is most suitable for you.

If you are getting the sibling DNA test done, be aware, the test results may show that the two of you are related but whether you are siblings may not be determined.
