What Are Home DNA Tests?
DNA Test is a complex test done using sophisticated equipment. So what is a home DNA test?
It is true that DNA tests are done by specialized centers using highly sophisticated machinery. Home DNA tests have not enabled this complex test to be done at home. What it has is enabled is collection of the test samples at home.
Not all labs are geared to do a DNA test. Also, not all labs will be able to collect samples for a DNA test. So getting the test kit by ordering online or buying a test kit from your nearest pharmacy makes things a lot more easier sometimes.
The home DNA test is especially helpful if the persons who are to be tested find it inconvenient to visit a testing laboratory. A DNA test is nothing but analyzing the DNA (or deoxyribonucleic acid) of an individual and making a record of it. DNA is a long, thin strand of material located within the cells of our body. And all the cells from an individual will contain exactly the same sample or compliment of DNA giving exactly the same picture every time his / her DNA is analyzed. The home test kit contains material to collect the DNA samples. A leaflet explaining the procedure will be enclosed with the kit. The recipient will have to read the instructions given very carefully and act accordingly. Cotton swab like objects will be placed to collect cells from the buccal mucosa or inner check of the individuals to be tested. When the samples are taken and packed as advised, the packet will need to be posted to the testing laboratory. The testing lab will analyze the DNA from the samples sent and issue the results. The results are confidential and most labs will take about five days to give the results. Home DNA testing kits are often used in cases of paternity testing. Some of the paternity testing kits are very cheap and can be ordered online or bought from pharmacies. The cheaper ones cost less than a hundred US dollars. Another use of home tests kits is to check the DNA of dogs. The Doggie DNA test kits are slightly different from the human test kits but the sample collecting procedure is similar. The drawback of home tests is that their results may not be accepted by the court or other government agencies. If you are to forward the results of a DNA test to any government authority, you will need to visit a government accredited testing centre for the test. Not all testing labs are accredited. So it will be wise to ask the lab you intend to visit before you go there. Home DNA tests have enabled you to acquire your mind's peace without much hassle.
