Wonderful World Of DNA Testing

Dna Testing

A DNA test is a highly sophisticated test done using modern technology and equipment. It analyzes the DNA of the sample presented.

Dna Testing

DNA (or deoxyribonucleic acid) is a double stranded structure located inside our cells. Our cells will have exactly the same sample or compliment of DNA in all of them. And every individual will have DNA which is unique to him. So, DNA is like a fingerprint and identification using DNA samples is often referred to as a DNA fingerprint or a genetic fingerprint.

DNA test is perhaps most often done to identify people. This is an especially helpful means of identification and is often used in police cases where forensic scientists use the genetic fingerprints taken from crime scenes to identify the criminal.

A DNA test may also be done to establish paternity, maternity, grand parentage, family tree and other biological relationships such as twins or siblings, racial and genealogical ancestry (e.g Native American).

A canine DNA test or a dog DNA test is used to establish the genetic ancestry of dogs to determine breeds. Similarly an HPV DNA test is used to detect the presence and identify strains of human papillomavirus.

The DNA used in a DNA test will depend on what is being looked for in such a test. The mitochondrial DNA (or mtDNA) is used to detect what is passed onto us through our maternal line of inheritance. An autosomal DNA test is as those who do the test claim, to determine the genetic ancestry from a particular ethnic origin.

The cost of these tests also depends on what you exactly want to get tested. It may be anything from a hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.

Today, you don't have to go to a DNA testing laboratory to get your DNA test done. You can buy their sample collection kits from pharmacies or even online from their websites. You may then collect the sample at home using buccal (cheek) swabs as advised in the leaflets enclosed in the kits and send them to the testing labs. Depending on the tests you need, your results can be expected within 5 - 15 days.

Not all DNA testing labs are accredited by the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks). So if you are to forward your results to the court or other government agencies, you must make sure you get the tests done from an accredited lab.
